Program Summary
Offered by the Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP), students gain the ability to critically analyze the ethical, legal, and social implications of applying analytics to urban challenges. The program emphasizes privacy considerations, social equity, and ethical decision-making throughout the data lifecycle. Students develop advanced skills in critical thinking, public communication, and technical analysis, with a dedicated focus on identifying and mitigating bias in technology and data-driven processes.
Outcomes/Objectives
Upon completion students will be able to:
Recognize and articulate where and why ethical issues arise in data collection, management, sharing, and analysis.
Evaluate the social equity and privacy implications of using big data in policy contexts, including government data repurposing and public monitoring.
Assess whether data-driven studies contribute to equitable policy outcomes and evaluate their societal implications.
Understand key technical, legal, ethical, and policy-related terms to mitigate or manage ethical concerns in data-driven research.
