As of 1/22/2021 the BattleFortress with RangeForce badge is no longer being actively awarded.
BattleFortress is a defensive exercise in which blue teams have to defend an operating IT environment from a series of cyberattacks. The event allows students to detect, respond and contain targeted cyberattacks while minimizing system downtime in a simulated range environment. This event is cohosted by RangeForce and the NYU Tandon Cyber Fellows program.
Through pre-event training and participation in the live event, students built familiarity with:
- How script kiddies and other threat actors execute defacement attacks.
- How poor security posture can result in ransomware and how to correctly identify remediation.
- How threat actors can use stealthy attacks to siphon out sensitive files and password hashes.
After completion of the event, students have an:
- Understanding of how to respond to defacement attacks, and how to identify correct ways to escalate to appropriate teams.
- Understanding of how poor security hygiene on external facing sites can be leveraged by threat actors.
- Understanding of how a Ransomware deployment looks like in an enterprise environment and how to hunt for files that have been encrypted by malicious activity.
- Understanding of how to identify data exfiltration, to triage compromised accounts for password reset, and identify when a file share is vulnerable.
